Tone-Matrix Platformer Prototype

WolverineSoft Studio is beginning a new development cycle, and with that a new batch of game pitches are being submitted to determine the direction of development! Here is a pdf of my game pitch as well as a video showing off a prototype.

INSPIRATION

This pitch spawned from the idea of wanting to create a platformer that puts creativity first. Players are given near complete control for how they want to approach a way around / thorough the hazards scattered around the stage. I feel that games that give players this much freedom for how they want to approach problems brings with it an unparalleled amount of intrinsic motivation, and raises the skill ceiling to be as high as players want it to be. Games like Ultimate Chicken Horse and Super Mario Maker are excellent examples of this design practice. The game itself does not impose any specific level of challenge onto the player, yet the player themselves is able to set the degree of challenge they want.

The tone matrix of the game is also directly inspired by this online toy / instrument.

Next steps

  • Determine the best platform for the game

    • This could potentially affect a lot of how the game feels and looks so it will be important to figure this out soon.

    • Mobile (small screen and touch screen) vs Keyboard & Mouse vs Controller

  • Determine the game’s intended audience and what it needs to be able to satisfy that

    • This will greatly affect what the essential experience of the game needs to convey

  • Create a compelling loop and sense of progression

    • The base gameplay and premise can be fun, but how can this be turned into a whole experience?
